Yup this afternoon was the Toyota Indy 400. I’ve never been to an actual race before so I was definitely excited to see this. Heck it was exciting enough to wake me up at 8.30am on a Sunday. My bro and I managed to leave the apartment around 9.10 and we did our pre-pre-race tasks of getting breakfast and gasing up for the trip to Fontana (eep!). Yup redneck country.

Amazingly, the whole trip turned out to be really great. There was no traffic on the 91 on the way up there. Then there was the rain. As you all know it was raining this morning, we were honestly worried on the way up since we didn’t know if the grandstand was covered or not; neither of us wanted to sit 3 hours in the rain you know. But by the time we got to the California Speedway the rain started dying off.

Raining at 10.30am

In fact, the rain stopped by the time we got to park. Here’s a shot of the grandstand on our way to the gates. It still looks pretty gloomy by yup no rain.

Now considering that it was 1.5 hours till race time, we needed something to do. Probably one of the best parts of the day is the fact that we got passes to the pit area, which is where we got to see a whole bunch of cool shit. We were able to go walk in the garages from seeing the pit crew getting the cars ready…

Here’s the ROCKSTAR Panther Racing crew setting up Tomas Enge’s car

Of course, there was one car my bro and I were looking for. Danica Patrick’s No. 16 car :-) Honestly, I’ve never heard of her amazing performace at the Indy 500. It was actually pretty easy to spot her car because it had one of the biggest crowds. Good thing is, we were able to get really close to the car…

(please ignore the bag on the driver’s seat)

Also here’s a shot of Jaques Lazier No. 10 car. I can’t believe it’s PINK!

Take a good look at those Patrick’s and Lazier’s car…

After the whole touring of the pit area, we headed for the grandstand and we got pretty decent seats. We were situated close to the finish line so we got a good view of the area where they do the flag thingy.. sorry I don’t know what you call that place. If you look below you can see John Elway in the striped blue shirt, waiting to get the chance to wave the green flag.

So yeah he did get to wave the green flag and the cars were off!

Start of the race!

Now I did ask you to remember the No. 10 and No. 16 cars because with only 15 laps to go, Danica’s left rear hit Jaques’ right front resulting in a really bad accident, where both cars slammed into the safety wall and took them out of the race.

Accident between Danica and Jaques

Seriously a whole bunch of fans were pissed off that Danica was out. In fact, I think everyone around me was rooting for her… all I could hear was Danica this and Danica that.. but yeah, she was the one I was cheering for.

So in the end No. 27 Dario Franchitti took the win for the Toyota Indy 400. It was an exciting finish since it was really neck and neck between him and Tony Kanaan. Anyway, the IndyCar site has a video of today’s highlights. It has the accident between Danica and Jaques as well as the match between Kanaan and Franchitti. It’s definitely worth a look! (click)

Finally, I just have to show you this picture which I took while we were leaving the pit area.

Easy button

I don’t blame you if you can’t figure out what I’m trying to show you because I had to shrink it for this site. But what I wanted to show you is that one of the ROCKSTAR Panther Racing crew members pushing a toolbox with an Easy button. You gotta love the irony in all of this…
